The saga of Air Force Station Pathankot began with formal sanction of Government of India on 15 Oct 1962. The station came into being on 07 Nov 1962 with tented accommodation and an overlay of PSP sheets for a Runway. Air Force Station Pathankot started its journey as a transport base initially to provide logistic support to Unitss in J&K area. However due to the strategic location of the base the station soon became a fighter base with the deployment of Gnat, Vampire and Mystere fighter aircraft. Soon the subsonic aircraft were replaced by the supersonic MIGs. In Mar 79, the Base was upgraded to Air Officer Command. Today Pathankot is a frontline air base which houses a fighter squadron, the first attack helicopter squadron, a Pechora squadron, a transportable Radar Units and Tropo Unitss.
